Background

Donkeys in Narnia do not occupy the center of the stories very often, but Puzzle gives the race an unforgettable place in The Last Battle. Lewis uses him to show how weakness, confusion, and fear can be exploited by someone stronger-willed and less scrupulous.

How the Race Functions in Narnia

Puzzle is not written as a noble war-horse or a dazzling magical creature. That is part of the point. The donkeys’ place in the story is humble, and Lewis uses that humility to make the tragedy sharper when innocence is misused.
