Cats in Narnia can be graceful, vain, useful, or treacherous depending on the individual. Lewis gives them the same moral flexibility he gives many other speaking creatures, which keeps them from feeling like stock symbols only.

When cats appear in the Chronicles, they often sharpen questions of loyalty and self-interest. A cat may be elegant and quick, but that does not guarantee steadfastness.
