The Earthmen of The Silver Chair are the gnome-like inhabitants of Underland, living in the deep country ruled by the Lady of the Green Kirtle. They help make the underground realm feel like a society, not a dungeon built only for one enchanted prince.
One of the book’s most memorable turns is that many Earthmen are weary of the Lady’s dominion and long, however dimly, for release into the deeper country below. That makes them more tragic and interesting than simple minions.
