Aliases: Governor Gumpas of the Lone Islands

Book portrayal

Gumpas is the corrupt governor of the Lone Islands in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Under his rule, slavery flourishes and Narnian authority has become little more than a phrase used to excuse bad government.

His scenes are effective because Lewis lets Caspian answer him as a king, not as an offended traveler alone. Gumpas talks like a petty official who thinks technicalities and revenue can justify anything. Caspian cuts through that fog and removes him.

Adaptation portrayals

Adaptations keep Gumpas tied to the decayed politics of Narrowhaven. Whether played broadly or more coldly, he still represents what happens when Narnian rule becomes self-serving instead of just.
