Book portrayal
Ahoshta Tarkaan is the aging grand vizier of the Tisroc in The Horse and His Boy and the man Aravis is expected to marry. He is physically unimpressive, but that is part of the point. Lewis does not make him threatening through size or glamour. He is dangerous through rank, calculation, and the quiet ugliness of the arrangement surrounding him.
Aravis’s horror at the proposed marriage tells readers a great deal before Ahoshta ever needs a large scene. He stands for the suffocating court politics and social expectations she is trying to escape. His climb into power through flattery and intrigue fits the larger portrait of Calormene public life as polished on the outside and morally bent underneath.
Ahoshta is a minor character, but he leaves a strong impression because he helps make Aravis’s flight feel urgent rather than merely adventurous.
