Book portrayal
Eustace begins as one of Lewis’s funniest irritations and becomes one of his most satisfying converts. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader introduces him as selfish, superior, and miserable company. Then the dragon episode strips him down to the truth about himself.
After that, Eustace never becomes blandly perfect. He becomes braver, truer, and far more companionable, while still feeling recognizably like himself. By The Silver Chair, he is one of the children most capable of enduring hardship without self-pity.
Adaptation portrayals
Screen versions usually do well with Eustace because his change is so dramatic. The trick is keeping his early awfulness funny without making his later renewal feel cheap.
