Book portrayal

Sallowpad is a talking raven who serves in the Narnian party gathered around King Edmund and Queen Susan during the Tashbaan crisis in The Horse and His Boy. He is not a flashy character, but he is one of the voices in the council trying to make sense of a dangerous situation.

His most useful contribution is practical. In the middle of discussion and uncertainty, Sallowpad gives information about the route from Calormen toward Archenland and Narnia. Shasta overhears that advice, and it helps shape the escape that follows.

That small role suits Lewis’s ravens well. They often function as alert, intelligent creatures who carry news and steady a scene with good sense. Sallowpad helps the Tashbaan chapters feel busy with real Narnian cooperation instead of resting everything on the four main human characters alone.
