Biography: A Calormene Tarkaan and the father of Emeth.

Book portrayal

Harpha appears only briefly in The Last Battle, but he helps define the world Emeth comes from. As Emeth’s father and a Calormene nobleman, he belongs to the social and religious order that has formed his son. That makes him part of the background against which Emeth’s sincerity becomes so striking.

Lewis does not develop Harpha in great depth, and that is fine. His role is structural. He reminds readers that Emeth’s hunger for truth arose inside a culture and household that named Tash, not Aslan, as lord.

Legacy in Narnia

Harpha is a minor supporting figure, but he helps frame one of the most interesting character arcs in the last book. Through him, Emeth’s story feels rooted in a real human inheritance rather than dropped out of nowhere.
