Book portrayal
Rishda Tarkaan is one of the main human antagonists in The Last Battle. He is politically shrewd, spiritually cynical, and perfectly willing to use religion as a tool of conquest. By partnering with Shift and exploiting Puzzle, he helps create the blasphemous lie of “Tashlan,” a fraud meant to break Narnia from the inside.
What makes Rishda effective is that he is more than violent. He is calculating. He sees how fear, confusion, and compromise can do more damage than open invasion. Lewis uses him to show how a corrupt power can weaponize false piety while meaning none of it.
Legacy in Narnia
Rishda Tarkaan is one of the sharpest villains in the series’ final volume. He helps give The Last Battle its sense of spiritual treachery as well as political collapse.
