Book portrayal

Cloudbirth is a centaur living in Narnia during the later reign of Caspian X. In The Silver Chair, he is known as a healer, which fits the older Narnian picture Lewis gives of centaurs as grave, learned creatures with practical wisdom as well as strength.

His most memorable task is treating Puddleglum after the marsh-wiggle badly burns his foot. That moment is small, but it gives Cloudbirth a distinct place in the story. He is not there for battle or prophecy. He is there to mend hurt, steady the company, and represent the ordinary faithfulness that still lives at Cair Paravel.

Cloudbirth also rounds out the centaurs as a people. Narnia’s centaurs are often remembered for star-reading and counsel, but Lewis leaves room for healing arts too. Cloudbirth helps make them feel like a whole race with different gifts, not one repeated type.
