Biography: The spokesman for the dwarfs who reject both Tashlan’s fraud and trust in Aslan, insisting instead on a guarded loyalty only to themselves.

Book portrayal

Griffle is the leading voice of the dwarfs’ hardening skepticism in The Last Battle. He is not fooled by the ape’s fraud forever, which at first can make him sound sensible. But Lewis takes him beyond healthy suspicion into something sadder. Griffle becomes the spokesman for a refusal to trust anyone or anything beyond dwarf self-interest.

That stance gives the novel one of its sharpest warnings. Being difficult to fool is not the same as being wise. Griffle sees through one lie only to build a prison out of disbelief.

Legacy in Narnia

Griffle helps make the famous line about the dwarfs being for the dwarfs land with real force. He is not a cartoon villain. He is a bitter realist who has let caution curdle into spiritual blindness.
